We Like Vans! Vans Like Us! | Travel "Different"

Our vehicles, like us, have their own unique character and personality.   Each of our vans have been completely restored to ensure that your trip is safe, but when we set out to create our fleet we wanted each vehicle to have one thing in common. Each one needed to tell a story.

Read about our rides below.

A Meia Vermelha: A Really Different History

This Van was once the proud means of transportation for the highly skilled textile workers of  the Feito em Lisboa (Made in Lisbon) factory.  As the years have gone by, the once powerful sock makers have  begun to fall on hard times. Orders are down as companies are looking to cut costs.  The company was forced to sell their van, among other things to stay in business.  We bought it from them with the promise that when things began to get better we would return to them their beloved van and always wear their socks!

This van can transport 8 people.

Cascalheira Futebol Clube: A Lisbon Story

This Van has seen its share of victories and defeats.  We won/lost  this Van in a bet with a local children´s football club. Well, we think they were children, but Joao their captain and leading scorer left a little doubt as we gazed with envy upon his enormous and incredibly well groomed mustache.   In spite of Joao's facial wonder we challenged the " Cascalheira F.C." anyway.   The match was hard fought and in the end the Cascalheiros won. We were defeated , but did not hang our heads in embarrassment as we had left it all out on the field.  As we were leaving,  Joao their leading scorer and team captain called out to Bruno.  "Don't forget the Keys!" as he tossed them to us.  "But we lost?" said a puzzled Bruno "I know, but we are getting a new van next week and would be proud  for you guys to keep our old one."  One thing he asked us was to tell the story of  The "Cascalheira F.C."  and their great victory over Bruno´s All-stars... and to never ever show up at their field again.

O Ladrão

We found this Van at a Police auction.  It had been used in one of the biggest Pastry heists of all time.   Joao "Sticky Fingers" Patanisca could hack any bank, swipe any jewel. There was no security system he  couldn't beat.  But it wasn't jewels or money that interested him.  He had a weakness for Portuguese Pastries.  Every time he thought of creamy custard, cinnamon and powdered sugar his heart began to beat faster and he couldn't resist the overwhelming urge to take them.   In the late 1990`s the price of custard tarts in Portugal had risen to an all time high, mainly because Joao had been stealing so many that supplies all over the country began to dwindle, and the cost of extra security guards being posted in cafes and bakeries propelled  these tarts to be more  expensive than an ounce of gold.  While Police across the country were searching for Patanisca , he was busy planning what has been come to be know as  "The Sweetest Steal."   His Plan was not only take the 25,000 tarts that lay inside of Lisbon`s most famous custard tart vendor(which will remain unnamed) but also to make off with their secret recipe that lay 3 concrete floor below the store in a heavily guarded high-tech safe.  His Plan was perfect, he knew it.  There was only one miscalculation that he made that led to his eventual downfall and arrest.  After stealing the pastries and secret recipe Joao had planned to escape through s series of underground tunnels that led to out to the tower of Belem.  There was only one problem.  He loved eating the pastries as much as he loved stealing them.  His addition had caused him to gain so much weight that on his escape he could not fit through the tunnels and became stuck.  When the police found him, all he said was "Life is sweet!"  We will keep his spirit alive by visiting the sight of his famous heist and tasting the pastries he loved so much.  Don´t worry we will pay for them!

UMM: Made in Portugal

The UMM is a 4x4 vehicle that was produced in Portugal by União Metalo-Mecanica.  They became know for their reliability, especially when in a Paris-Dakar rally the team was able to finish with all the cars that started.  The company stopped producing for private owners in 1994 and eventually stopped production altogether.  Besides ours, the most famous UMM is probably the one that transported Pope John Paul II in one of his visits to Portugal.
